US Air Force Secretary wants to increase squadrons by 24%

At the recent Air, Space and Cyber Conference, United States Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson detailed her vision for increasing the number of squadrons by 24%, taking the force up to 386 squadrons from the current level of 312.

Citing several studies, as well as feedback from service personnel, the USAF is too small to fulfil its mission as outlined in the Department of Defense’s National Defense Strategy, Wilson says at the Air Force Association’s Air, Space & Cyber Conference taking place this week in National Harbor, Maryland.“We know now from analysis what everyone in this room knows from experience: The Air Force is too small for what the nation expects of us. 312 operational squadrons is not enough,” she says. “The air force we need to implement the National Defense Strategy has 386 operational squadrons.”

Of course, in order to increase the number of squadrons, the Air Force would need more planes, which is good news for those aerospace companies that are part of our Safety & Security Index and another strong tailwind for those companies.
