Gun control debate driving up sales and creating a scarce resource

The focus oftentimes for our Safety & Security thematic is on cybersecurity and homeland security (homeland defense spending). But the third leg of the stool in this thematic is personal security — whether it takes the form of home security systems, alarms, or even firearms.

The great debate in the United States taking place in the media, politics and through social media channels over gun control this past week is one way beyond the realm of our focus at Tematica Research. No matter which side of the debate you fall under, the fact that the debate itself is taking place, appears to be driving up gun sales:

Smith & Wesson is selling more guns than ever. The company, one of the nation’s largest gun sellers, reported a 22.4% annual increase in firearm sales Thursday.

After the shooting in San Bernardino in December, Smith & Wesson’s quarterly sales jumped 61.5%.

Perhaps this is the consumer’s move towards preparing for what could become a firearms shortage in the near future, which would make the weapons a Scarce Resource in our thematic view of the world.
